Automatic Knife Selection and Features
Automatic knives are useful for people who enjoy carrying a knife for security
or protection where hand functionality might be debilitaed. When purchasing
an automatic knife, there are a few choices to consider. There are basically
two types of blade deployment in automatic knives: Out-the-Front actuation and
Out-the-Side actuation.
Out-the-Front actuation automatic knives come in two choices. Single action
deploys the blade out the front of the automatic knife with a manual retraction
feature. Double action deploys the blade out the front of the automatic knife
with an automatic retraction feature.
Out-the-Side automatic knives are manufactured in three diferent release mechanism
styles and all feature manual retraction. The button release mechanism is simply
depressed to deploy the blade out the side of the automatic knives. The bolster
release mechanism is achieved by rotating a forward piece of material on the
automatic knife handle around the blade's pivot point, genereally counter-clockwise.
The scale release mechanism deploys the blade by rotating the entire side of
the automatic knife. The pivot point may be located at either end of the knife.
Single action Out-the-Side automatic knives have no way of actuating the blade
other than automatically. Double action Out-the-Side automatic knives actuate
the blade both automatically, as well as manually.
