Custom
knifemaker Greg Lightfoot’s web page has a button announcing
his New Home Security System. When you click on it, you see his American
Staffordshire Terrier “Mako” in full defense mode. Similarly,
Greg’s Lightfoot Urban Shark (L.U.S.) models for CRKT are little
personal security systems, with the sleek design balance of a shark.
Pat Covert of American Handgunner has said it best: “Canadian
Greg Lightfoot is one of those knifemakers that carries around with
him a natural Zen for design . . . . For lack of a better word for
it, Lightfoot’s designs are . . . well . . . together.”
CRKT’s production of Lightfoot’s Urban Shark is spot on.
The upswept trailing point blade is AUS 6M stainless steel, in a
special non-reflective frost finish, with just slightly more sheen
than bead blast. It is double hollow ground, and is available in Razor-Sharp
and Combination Razor-Sharp and Serrated models. The Triple-Point™
serration is designed to be exceptionally durable. There’s an
elevated thumb ramp with friction grooves for positive control, and
double thumb studs for ambidextrous one-hand opening and closing.
Construction is the same as CRKT's Mirage series, with double 420
J2 stainless steel liners, Torx® fastener assembly, 6061 T6 hard
anodized aluminum back spacers and Mako Gray textured Zytel® scales.
The scales are subtly contoured from front to back and top to bottom
to fill the hand perfectly. The handle also arcs down to better fit
hands of all sizes. Teflon® bearings make the blade action as
slick as an eel.
An important functional and esthetic detail are the serrations around
the butt of the handle and at the index finger area. These greatly
increase security and tactile awareness, especially when used with
alternate grips.
A curved gray, Teflon-plated removable pocket clip, embossed with
a small shark’s tooth logo, completes the package. In addition,
CRKT is attaching a custom-tied paracord lanyard to the L.U.S. unique
oval lanyard eye—a detail usually found only in hand-made knives.
The L.U.S. may look like a shark and feel like a shark, but when
compared to other knives of similar materials and quality, it’s
one killer whale of a value.
